The power of diversity in television is very apparent tonight. For the first time ever, I actually sat through the entire emmy broadcast. Early in the evening I declared that I was watching because I wanted to see Kerry Washington make history and be the first black woman to win Best Outstanding Lead Actress in Drama Series. A win for Kerry would have been so much more than history, because not only did she deliver an emmy worthy performance as "Olivia Pope," she would have pulled out a win against some serious competition. Kerry was up against actresses who all delivered emmy worthy performances in their respective roles -- particularly Claire Danes. When the envelope was finally opened this evening and Kerry Washington's name was not called, yes I was disappointed but not pissed off and thinking that she was robbed. I watch Homeland and believe that Claire Danes delivered a performance that was worthy of an emmy win -- even against Kerry Washington.
Homeland is a serious show and very much like Scandal, has a strong female lead actress, excellent writing and a phenomenal supporting cast. Anyone who watches Homeland knows what I'm talking about. So this declaration on social media by many black folks (who like me, tuned in to watch Kerry snag a win and make history) that Kerry Washington was robbed of an emmy, is just completely false. To say that someone was robbed is to say that the winning party delivered a performance that was far below the performance of the losing party. By no means did Claire Danes deliver a crappy performance in Season 2 of Homeland. She actually delivered a better performance in Season 2 than she did in Season 1, and she won the emmy last year for her performance in Season 1. Kerry Washington on the other hand was robbed last year, when she wasn't nominated for an emmy. This year she received a nomination for Season 2. Again, emmy worthy but not enough to pull out a win in this category.

Kerry had some serious competition. Just incase someone wants to bring in the "race card," spare me. This is the same recognition body who made Susan Lucci wait twenty-one years for an emmy win. Susan Lucci famously played daytime drama queen Erica Kane on "All My Children." Lucci was first nominated in 1978 and every year after that. She did not pick up a win until 1999. She was the butt of all jokes for many years and even made fun of the numerous emmy snubs herself. I'm not saying that this is Kerry's fate, it's just to show you that the emmy is a very picky body. Kerry will deliver another emmy worthy performance when Season 3 begins on October 4th. Her time will come.
