We all felt sorry for the poor schmuck who arrived late, looked around in a panic, couldn't find any other seat, and had to spend the next hour or so sitting next to this fellow and trying not to breathe. But we also all felt better him than me!
We all have our own individual scents which are pleasing or displeasing to various people for a myriad of reasons. Culture can play a part as well. Some cultures are just fine with a higher level of "natural" aroma. North American culture places a very high value on smelling "neutral" or "pleasant". Lots of white collar workers spend all day in air-conditioned offices. So there is less tolerance for body odors. And I am just fine with that!! There's no one who smells better at the end of a long stressful day than at the beginning of it. But when everyone across the board agrees that something really stinks, as it did with the man I am remembering, chances are there is a real problem. The person in question MIGHT need to go take a shower and actually use soap this time. When I saw this story I was reminded of my smelly former co-worker. If I could have kicked him out of the building and for that matter out of the country, God help me I would have.
MIAMI - A family vacationing in Miami told Local 10 News they were booted from their flight after passengers complained about their body odor."There's no body odor that we have," Yossi Adler said Thursday morning at Miami International Airport. "There's nothing wrong with us."
Adler, his wife and their 19-month-old daughter were preparing to fly back home to Detroit on Wednesday night when they were escorted off their American Airlines flight. "All of a sudden, as soon as they took us off, they closed the gate and then they said, 'Sorry, sir, some people complained you had body odor and we're not letting you back on,'" Adler recalled.The Adlers said they were told their luggage would be taken off the plane, but that didn't happen, leaving them with only the clothes on their backs. "They have our car seat, stroller, everything," Jennie Adler said.
American Airlines sent a statement to Local 10 on Wednesday night acknowledging the reason for their removal. "Mr. Adler and his wife were removed from the flight when several passengers complained about their body odor," the statement said. "They have been booked into a hotel for the night and given meal vouchers. They have been rebooked on a flight Thursday."
It is embarrassing to have your hygiene publicly questioned. That is why most of us learned to clean ourselves when we were children. Those habits should stay with you for life. It is also a pain to have to call someone out for a lack of hygiene. I don't think people complained about Adler because of his religion or looks. There was apparently a problem. If multiple people complained it must have been a pretty bad one. People who don't properly clean themselves on a regular basis often become indifferent to their own odor. Most people don't seek out confrontation but this was evidently something so bad that confrontation was required. Perhaps there is a medical issue? Funky is good for music, not so much for smell.
